LO5: Production Budget

Resources required

                Human:

  • Presenters – Jake Dungworth, Lewis Leversidge and Harry Swallow
We will also be responsible for the production process of Steel Reel; therefore we replace individuals such as DJ's and editors and so there will be no cost.

                Equipment:

  • Software – Editing (Adobe Audition) [£27.34 per month]
Ideally, we would like industry professional software such as Pro Tools, but to be cost effective we are using Adobe Audition for a couple of months during post production as this is the cheapest software available.

  • Hardware – Professional Radio Microphones (sE Electronics se x1 Vocal Pack Microphone) {x3} [£129.99], PC (Lenovo C470 Touch Screen All in one) [£499.99] , Behringer Xenyx X1204 Portable Mixing Desk [£88.52]
We will use these professional grade microphones, to record our conversations, one for each of the presenters as well as an extra for guest interviews. The computer is required for utilising our editing software and live cues for jingles, tracks and vox pops are played via our mixing desk.

  • Music Licensing – PRS License [£300 per year]
As the majority of music played on the Steel Reel is copyrighted (Movie Themes), we will require a PRS License allowing the programme to play any music.

  • Studio Furniture – Computer Desk (StudioRTA Creation Station) [136.52], Berlin Executive Office Chair (Viking Direct) {x3} [£41.99]
Accompanies the hosts as well as our guest if we were to do an in-studio interview; desk to do all editing from.

                Location:

  • Studio Space Rental – Sheffield Live! Offices [£30 per month]
Included in this cost is the privilege to be able to broadcast your programme for the radio station.

                Production time (recording and editing):

  • Live Recording Sessions – Up to 2 hours
  • Editing – (Adding Music and sound effects, cutting out ‘dead air’) 4-6 hours  per show

LO 5: Contingency Plan

In case something occurs which would delay production, we will use this plan to try continue production.
  • Member of production team absent > Split their duties between rest of team
  • Host absent for show > Continue Recording; potentially replace with guest host for one show
  • Equipment faults > Ask Sheffield Live! for loan of equipment until repaired or replaced
  • Lack of News > Move up a Special Episode; e.g. If week 4 (Scheduled Normal Episode) does not have enough Film topics to put into the show, unlike week 5 where there may be many film releases for example, we would move up the Music Special (Week 5 proposed show) up to the week 4's episode

LO 5: Legal and Ethical Considerations

Copyright and Licensing
For the Steel Reel podcast, music played on the show will most likely be copyrighted and therefore will require a PRS license. For example, as part of a regular feature on our show there will be themed film soundtracks such as music from the films of Quentin Tarantino (i.e. Miserlou from Pulp Fiction). This ensures that royalties made from the music on our show go to the copyright holders (MCA Records Inc), and not to us. Using the Intellectual Property (IP) and copyrighted material of others for our own benefit is illegal. Music and audio we may use from music producers who aren't part of PRS will need to be contacted directly so that they can authorize the use of their IP in our product. An example of people who may not be part of PRS could be local film producers; e.g WARP Films, we might use a soundtrack from one of their productions.

For our alternative idea, Manter, we looked at soundtracks that were available royalty free, meaning we do not have to pay license fees for the use of the music in our show. For the theme tune, "Latin Elevator Muzak", there is a Music Broadcast Licensing Fee of $28 we must purchase in order to broadcast the music over the Radio. This entitles us to usage of this product outlined in these License Terms.

Ethical Considerations
The Steel Reel podcast is scheduled to be broadcast prior to the watershed at 9pm, meaning there can be no portrayal of mature themes on the show due to the potential for children to be listening. The governing body controlling broadcasted content, OFCOM instills regulations that mature themes such as the following can not reach children over the radio:
  • Sexual Themes
  • Drug and Alcohol References
  • Violence and Dangerous behavior
  • Strong Language
  • References to exorcism and the paranormal
Therefore we cannot swear or make references to these themes during our show, In case something in particular is uttered that could be deemed as harmful to children, we will pre-record the show and edit any swearing or potential references to these themes out.

Furthermore, any other themes that may be found as offensive such as discrimination on the grounds of gender, age, race, religion, ethnicity etc. will never be featured on the Steel Reel podcast. We aim to be a community show that can cater for the majority of audiences and causing offense can harm our listenership.

Interaction from our listeners via social network contact and emails will not be featured on our show if they in someway breach any of these guidelines. This is because of the possibility of younger audiences listening to the show.

Due to the content of the show essentially being the reviews of films, which may attain Age certificate restrictions themselves; it is important that we do not portray the strong themes that those films may carry throughout show, due to the possibility that of children of any age could be listening to the show. On Television, the advertisements of media products that carry age restrictions in order to purchase or consume are allowed to be shown prior to the watershed as long as the aforementioned strong themes are not portrayed.

LO 5: Selection of audio product for production, Future Developments and Production Schedule

Based on our feedback from the presentation and our own decision, we have decided upon producing the Steel Reel Podcast.

As we talked about in our presentation, our plan was to maintain a general layout to each show yet change the theme of the episode to attract new audiences and branch into new genres. For example, for a school holiday period, we would plan an episode especially for younger audiences and families who would be looking for entertainment during the holidays. This show would focus primarily on  reviews for animated and children's movies as well as fun features that would keep the audiences listening. Such as competitions to win a voucher for toy shops as well as family tickets to see an upcoming film.
Our provisional episode theme plan for the first 8 episodes are as follows:
  1. Opening show - Round up of 2014's best films, Top 10 films everybody should watch
  2. *Regular Episode
  3. Horror Special - Best Horror films of all time, Recent Horror movie reviews, Soundtracks
  4. *Regular Episode
  5. Music Special - Greatest Soundtracks and musicals
  6. Children's Special - Animated Reviews, Competition
  7. *Regular Episode
  8. Steel City Special - Focus on the local film industry, interviews with actors and directors
* Regular Episodes have the general format of features; Showbiz News, Film Reviews of releases from the past week and soundtracks, but don't have an overlying theme

For the Steel City Special, we will be hopefully interviewing individuals that we have worked with together before. Mark Herbert, CEO of WARP Films and Rob Speranza, chair of South Yorkshire Film Network whom briefed and gave advice us on our film making.  James Scanlan, Mike Davies and Luke Goddard; actors from a short film we created last year.

Social Networking

We will be incorporating listeners as much as possible by creating social networking hubs like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to interact with their suggestions and feedback, which will be managed by myself. The audience interaction from one episode may influence the next; e.g. suggestions on what to review next, shoutouts, local film related stories. The best comments will be said during the show by our hosts. Interaction from our listeners via social network contact and emails will not be featured on our show if they in someway breach any legal and ethical considerations as outlined in the post of the same title.
